Going Solo in December
Solo games, and new Hellgreen updates!
Greetings fellow wizards! In today’s letter we are going to discuss about:
✍Going solo: why we enjoy solo games
🎲 Hellgreen: new updates on my solo game
Without further ado, let’s begin!
Going Solo
I have recently realized that what begun as a niche in the niche, is quickly becoming its own fully fledged hobby.
No, I am not talking about tiktoks of people eating a gazillion hot dogs, I’m talking about Solo Games.
I think everyone’s first impression when discovering solo games were a thing was “What!? And how are you supposed to enjoy a thing?”, especially in the case of solo tabletop RPGs.
After all, tabletop games like RPGs or wargames have been for more than 50 years a social hobby, and there was no such thing as a game you could play and enjoy on your ow-
Oh, okay. Fair enough.
Gamebooks!
Books like “Fighting Fantasy”, “Lone Wolf” and “Sorcery!” are essentially the ancestors of Solo Games, and their appeal is quite simple: you can sit down, grab a book, and play and dungeon delve by yourself. How cool is that?
Well Solo Games double down on that. Take Colostle for example. There’s not just the classic “fighting monsters and reading”, there’s a whole lot of new mechanics that help you forge a narrative alongside the classic exploration and fighting.
And you know what makes these games even better? With a few tweaks, they can become great co-op games or classic TTRPGs.
As a matter of facts, many games today are introducing Solo modes to their games (just like the beautiful Stoneburner by Farirpgs did) and I can totally see why: if you can try and enjoy a game in single player, you will probably consider suggesting it to your gaming group!
Another good example I have found outside the RPG scene, is the wargame Stargrave by Joseph A. McCullough. The game features expansions that can be played solo, co-op, and competitively, all while staying under the same narrative.
Which means you can take your space crew through hellish scenarios and then confront your friend’s crew, who’s probably already been through their own hell.
How cool is that?
I have also been suggested games like Rangers of the Shadow Deep by the same author, and Five Leagues from the Borderlands by Ivan Sorensen, which are definitely on my to-play-list.
Well, to put it shortly, the Solo tabletop scene is fantastic, and the best thing is that it seems to only get better as time goes by and many authors try new approaches.
Speaking of authors, time for a shameless plug about a solo game…
Hellgreen, my upcoming solo TTRPG is now fully-written. Hooray!
That means that we are closer and closer to the launch of the Kickstarter campaign, which you can find right here.
I will now focus on making artworks and checking out everything is okay layout-wise. I don’t usually like setting dates, but I think we could be launching this around January 2025. Hopefully!
Well my fellow wizards, I already hear you saying “but what will I do until January?” and that is why I am suggesting you try out the FREE, UPDATED, demo of HELLGREEN! Available rrright here.
That’s it for today, wizards, if the fight against dark forces of life allows me, next week we will be looking at some interesting games (both RPGs and Wargames) to look out for in the remnants of 2024 and the future of 2025!
